Small-Group Kjerag Hike with Transfers

About this experience

Fjord Hikes is a small Stavanger guiding company that runs Kjerag, Pulpit Rock and longer trips along the Lysefjord. The day starts at 7:00 at the pickup point you choose. The route out runs through Hunnedalen, a huge glacial trough, past a village and over the bare, moon-like plateau of the Lysevegen road to Øygardstøl. The Kjerag café and restaurant stands at the trailhead there, and the listing includes a short stop.

On the trail it's the standard plan: three climbs, each separated by an alpine valley, about 11 km in all. Guests name their guides (Stephan and Erlend come up most) and praise them for warning about the hard sections before they arrive and lending a hand on the chains. The listing gives about 30 minutes at Kjerag itself, enough for lunch, the boulder and the cliff edge if nobody dawdles.

The catch is the pace. One guest wrote that there are "less breaks as we need to return to Stavanger by 7", and the listing asks for strong fitness, not moderate. The trailhead parking, about NOK 300 a day, is paid for you; lunch and tips are not. At $236 it costs $22 more than the Lysefjorden Adventure day, for a younger listing with a perfect score.

What guests say

★★★★★

Guide responded to all questions before the hike. Pickup was prompt and he helps with photos. Overall a great day!! The hike is intense and ther are less breaks as we need to return to Stavanger by 7. So make sure you're fit. Both uphill and downhill are equally challenging

Our guide Stephan was an expert, he knew every detail of the hike. The tempo of trail was perfect. He anticipated the difficult part and gave plenty of warning, and lent you a hand just when you needed it.

We had a great time on our hike. We were a small group (5 people) and our guide Erlend was fantastic. The hike is challenging in parts because it is very steep, but it's worth it. [...] The whole tour was very well organised.

It's hard trek but worth it. Double check weather before you go. Guide was amazing and took great care of us. He was very educational and knowledgeable.

Tips before you book

  • Train for the downhill too. A guest wrote that "both uphill and downhill are equally challenging": the chained descents are where tired legs shake.
  • Pack a lunch you can eat fast. With about 30 minutes at the boulder, a sandwich beats anything that needs unwrapping and sharing.
  • Ask your questions before the day. Guests say the guide answers messages in advance, which is the time to check boots and the forecast.
  • Under-18s can't book alone: children aged 10 to 12 and youths aged 13 to 17 come with an adult on the same booking.
  • Guided Kjerag days only run while the Lysevegen road is open, usually from mid or late May until autumn snow. Our 2027 season post covers what to expect.
