Pulpit Rock with a guide

The company behind our most-reviewed Kjerag day takes groups of eight from Stavanger to Preikestolen, the flat-topped cliff 604 m above the Lysefjord. Pick it if Kjerag sounds like too much: about 8 km and 4 hours on foot instead of 11 km and 6.

Guided Pulpit Rock Hike from Stavanger

About this experience

This is not a Kjerag tour, and we list it for one reason: plenty of people come to Stavanger for Kjerag, read about the chains and the 11 km, and choose Preikestolen instead. Lysefjorden Adventure, which also runs the guided Kjerag hike, collects you at 7:00 from a hotel or Airbnb in the centre, or meets you at the Radisson Blu Atlantic, and drives about an hour to the Preikestolen trailhead.

The hike itself is about 8 km return with roughly 500 m of climbing, around 4 hours on foot, graded medium. The reward is the flat rock 604 m above the Lysefjord, and the listing leaves time at the top for photos and lunch. With 412 reviews at 4.7, it's one of the most-reviewed hikes from Stavanger.

Medium doesn't mean easy. Guests describe steep, rocky steps that are hard on bad knees going down, and one called it "brutally difficult" for anyone out of shape. Lunch isn't included. And unlike Kjerag, Preikestolen has guided dates outside summer: reviews mention hikes in November and January, when the official advice is to go only with a guide.

  • The easier of the two big Lysefjord hikes: about 8 km, around 4 hours
  • Hotel or Airbnb pickup in central Stavanger at 7:00
  • A group of eight at most
  • 4.7 from 412 reviews
  • Guided dates outside the summer season too
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before

What guests say

★★★★★

Had an amazing trip to Preikestolen, escorted by our friendly guide. Extremely hot day so would recommend going early if walking it in the summer. Kent our guide was great at allowing us to walk at our own pace. We weren't hurried at all. The view from the top was well worth it the hike up the rocks.

The tour guide showed up in front of our hotel right at time. She's very chill and detail oriented. She would introduce some history of Norway during the hike. Also introduce us some local plants. [...] The hike is very manageable even if you're not physically strong.

Our guide (Kenth) was great! He was helpful and made sure we were wearing the right type of clothing and hiking shoes. I have a fear of heights, everything was fine but 100 meters before Pulpit Rock I stopped and stayed put. Kenth guided our group to Pulpit Rock, then came back for me.

Tips before you book

  • Use poles if you have them. A guest recommends them, and says to "focus down where you place every step".
  • Bring lunch: you eat at the top, and food isn't included.
  • If you change hotels after booking, confirm the new pickup with the operator directly. One guest struggled to get a reply through Viator.
  • Want both hikes? The overnight trip does Preikestolen and Kjerag in two days, and our comparison helps you choose one.
